How to search photos by face on iPhone

You remember who was in the picture, not when you took it. Searching by face starts from the person, which is how most of us actually remember photos.

Start from a person, not a date

Scrolling the camera roll works for last week. For a photo from two summers ago it means thousands of swipes. Styart analyzes the faces in your library and groups similar ones, so one tap on a person shows you their photos across years.

Narrow it down

A person can appear in hundreds of photos. Add a place (“Kyoto”) or a time range (“August 2024”) and the list shrinks to the handful you were looking for. Filters can be combined freely.

Your faces stay on your phone

Face grouping happens on your device. The photos and face data used for analysis are not uploaded to Styart’s servers. Styart compares faces inside your own library; it is not a tool for looking people up online.

How to do it in Styart

  1. Install Styart and allow access to your photo library.
  2. Let Styart analyze your library once. Large libraries take a little longer the first time.
  3. Open People and tap the person you are looking for.
  4. Add a place or date filter to jump to the exact moment.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work with old photos?

Yes. Styart looks at the photos already in your library, including old ones, as long as they are on the device or available in your Photos library.

Can it find someone in a group photo?

Yes. Each detected face in a photo is grouped, so group shots appear under every person Styart recognizes in them.

Is this the same as a reverse face search on the web?

No. Styart only searches your own photo library on your device. It does not search the internet.
